The Dante Project is an epic journey through the afterlife, inspired by Dante’s 'Divine Comedy'. The Royal Ballet’s first ever co-production with Paris Opera Ballet takes its inspiration from Dante’s Divine Comedy and is presented as part of the 700th anniversary celebrations of the poet’s death in 1321. The season will lead with master of physicality Wayne McGregor’s Dante Project, 700 years following the great Italian polymath’s death, a production which has been in the works for over three years (and is inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy). Jonas Kaufmann takes the lead roles in Damiano Michieletto’s double production of Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci, alongside Albanian soprano Ermonela Jaho and Georgian mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili. Dante’s Divine Comedy is an epic journey through the afterlife: it encompasses the horrifying drama of Inferno and its damned, the lyrical mysticism of pilgrims on mount Purgatorio and the dazzling spheres of Paradiso with their endless configurations of light.
